The curious case of dandelions

Dandelions are almost always thought of as weeds, but that’s not really a fair classification. Before their reputation as intrusive eyesores on a well-manicured lawn, they were used for their vast health benefits. The entire plant, from the root all the way up to the flower is not only edible, but highly nutritious.

What are dandelions good for?

Dandelions are a great source of vitamins A, B, C, E, and K. They’re also rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium.

It’s kind of hard to believe, right? Well, there’s even more to like. If you’re like most other health-conscious individuals, you try to consume a good amount of antioxidants every day. Antioxidants are molecules that help prevent the effects of free radicals, the excess of which can cause illness and accelerated aging.Dandelions are full of antioxidants that will keep these free radicals at bay.

They’ve even created a dandelion tea, a delicious, low calorie, caffeine-free alternative for the hopeless coffee addict.

The entire plant, from the root all the way up to the flower is not only edible, but highly nutritious.

The history of dandelions

Now for some history:the dandelion’s botanical name, “Taraxacum officinale” suggests that it has long been valued for its healing properties. The name “Taraxacum” comes fromGreek and means anti-inflammatory, with “officinale” being the name for herbs. It’s not just the Greeks that appreciated the dandelion, though. They were also used by the Romans, Egyptians, and Chinese. In fact, it’s been an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicines for over a thousand years.

There is still much to be discovered about all the potential health benefits of dandelions. A considerable amount of research does, however, indicate that we may only be scratching the surface of what they can really do for us. A few of these possible benefits are lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, aiding in weight-loss, promoting healthy digestion, and fighting cancer.

So, the next time you see dandelions growing on your lawn, maybe you’ll think twice before reaching for the weed killer. We’re not saying you should pick them and chow down right on the spot, but if you want to put these claims to the test, try one of RainInternational’s products (CORE) that features dandelion extract. Your body will thank you.
