Why oh why are you having trouble losing weight? You exercise daily, you try to eat healthy, but that stubborn fat doesn’t seem to budge. It’s beyond frustrating and almost pushes you to the brink of giving up. The truth is, weight loss, and fitness for that matter, is a numbers game. And those numbers are 80-20. Let me explain a little more.
It’s incredibly hard to outrun your diet. Or, more simply stated: it’s much easier to eat more calories than you can burn each day. To make matters worse, many people use the fact that they worked out as justification to eat poorly. Have you ever said: “I worked out hard today so I deserve this ice cream.” Or, “I run two miles every day so I can eat my favorite candy.”
What you eat and how you exercise - 80% relies on nutrition, 20% relies on exercise.
Most of us have. Unfortunately, that’s a bad diet plan. This is why the 80-20 rule is incredibly important: Fitness, weight loss, and muscle gain effectiveness is separated into nutrition, what you eat and, exercise. 80% relies on nutrition, 20% relies on exercise.
Both are crucial, but nutrition is the most important. Have you ever heard the term “abs are made in the kitchen?” This statement is not only a fitness idiom, but it’s backed by science. Again, you cannot outrun, or out-situp in this case, your diet. So, if diet is so important, how should you eat? This brings us to our second, 80/20 rule.
Calories in and calories out is the foundation of what should guide you: how many calories am I consuming daily vs. how many calories am I burning daily? Eat less calories than you burn, and you’ll begin to trim down and lose weight.
Additionally, if you ensure that 80% of the calories you consume daily come from whole food sources (natural, vegetables, lean proteins, etc), then 20% can come from unhealthier sources (processed, fast foods, sugars, etc). Although, you should remember, that 20% can and does add up very quickly.
If you begin to monitor these simple things, you’ll finally start to see results. Remember, fitness and healthy living is a lifestyle, but it’s a lifestyle that’s both fulfilling and worth it. Good luck on your 80-20 quest
